Built in the mid 1960s,[1][2] the Graduate Studies Building was a building on the Westwood Campus that was demolished in 2024. Adjacent to the New Education Building,[3][4][5] it housed a number of different things throughout its life, including, for a while, the Institute of Education.[6] The building featured a one-story section and a two-story section, and connected to the New Education Building via a bridge between the first floor of each building.[7][8][1][2]
Location
The Graduate Studies Building was located in the eastern-most portion of the Westwood Campus, north of the New Education Building,[3][4][5] which it connected to via a bridge.[8][9][10]
Previous uses
Like the New Education Building, the Graduate Studies Building contained "WE"-coded centrally timetabled rooms.[11][12][13][14][15] In November 2007, WE0.01 and WE1.17 were the only centrally timetabled rooms.[14] In May 2015, the rooms WE0.29, WE1.16 and WE1.17, which were centrally timetabled, were closed without notice due to potential structural issues discovered when refurbishing the building.[11] In August 2017, WE0.01, WE0.29, WE1.16 and WE1.17 were the only centrally timetabled rooms.[15] The centrally timetabled rooms may have still existed until as late as July 2023, as indicated by signs outside the building,[12] although whether they were in use this late is unclear.
The building also contained a "Telepresence suite" in WE0.20 for an unknown period of time including May 2015.[11]
The building also contained "Multimedia Labs" for an unkown period of time including July 2023, as indicated on signs outside the building.[12][13]
Moreover, WMG used the building for an unkown period of time also including July 2023 as their logo was present on the main entrance.[12][13]
The final version of the building's floorplans before being demolished showed it containing
- three rooms housing a "History of Art Image Library" (WE0.17, WE0.19, and WE0.20),
- several store rooms,
- many rooms (including the entire first floor),
- a few offices, and
- a server room,
along with the usual lobbies, corridoors, toilets and plant rooms.[7]
